In the Beginning

“Let me get this straight,” Alexis stared defiantly at the bus of a man, “You need me to go back in time with you, to prevent myself from knowing that you’ve gone back in time?”

Shawn nodded, “Yes, you are one of the few hundred people on earth that can see distortions in time.”

“So, because I haven’t ever seen any distortions in time, it must be that I accept your offer and go with you and successfully prevent myself from seeing us, right?”

Shawn laughed, “Yup, pretty much. Time is like a movie. You may be ‘watching’ the movie at the beginning, but the end will be the same. Then once you’re at the end you can go back to the beginning and start watching the characters before they make all their decisions but the end will play out just as it had before.”

Alexis frowned, “That seems sort of shitty. So what you’re saying is that no matter what sort of decisions I make the end has already been decided?”

“Yeah, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that we still have to do what’s required of us to get to that end.” Shawn rose from his plush chair, his military tags clinking together. “I’m going to go get the rest of the team together since you’ve already discovered that you have to go with us.” He left the warm and soft waiting room to venture through the sheet metal and concrete of the rest of the top secret base.

Alexis put her hand to eyes. This was just crazy. She had always been interested in sci-fi novels and time travel theory but she never thought it actually meant anything. What had he called her? Time sensitive? He had explained that when they went back in time, if her past self saw them without her current self’s dimming aura then her past self would see the time distortions halos they caused just by being there. What was the big deal with past Alexis seeing them, if current Alexis could be trusted to go with them? What were they doing in the past anyway? Her head was reeling, this was really too much.
